Downtown Scholars Initiative (DSI) Summer Bridge Program Summer 2022

The Downtown Scholars Initiative (DSI) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is a two-part program geared towards local high school students. The Pre-College Program provides students interested in attending UCF with support services to assist in application processes and connections to the campus community. The Summer Bridge Program provides accepted UCF students with a downtown residential experience, free tuition and books, peer mentoring, and service learning opportunities during their first summer term entering freshman year. National Achievers Society McKnight Center for Excellence (MCOE) Brain Bowl Competition, Spring 2022

Brain Bowl: Florida Education Fund (FEF) hosts an Annual State Brain Bowl Academic Competition designed to motivate students to improve skills in critical reading and later in mathematics, writing, vocabulary and coding. Students prepare for the Brain Bowl over a period of several months by reading college-level written works; solving challenging mathematical problems; learning and using advanced vocabulary in writing and speech; exercising their writing, speaking and critical thinking skills to compose and present essays on character-related principles; and using their computational thinking and programming skills to address issues in their communities. Downtown Scholars Initiative Black & Gold Day Event

Downtown Scholars Initiative (DSI) at the University of Central Florida in collaboration with the Parramore Education and Innovation District held its first Black and Gold Takeover Day at Jones High School. The event introduced students to the many opportunities available to them at UCF through classroom presentations, spirit competitions, tabling from various registered student organizations and programs, a selfie station, photo opportunities with Knightro, and more. National Achievers Society Annual Statewide Summit (Virtual Event)

National Achievers Society (NAS) University of Central Florida McKnight Center for Excellence (MCOE) Annual Summit (Virtual), Spring 2022

The NAS Summit is an annual educational Pre-College Summit sponsored by the FEF that includes workshops for students in grades K-12. The workshops for middle and high school students motivate and prepare them for college, while exposing them and their parents to higher educational opportunities. The high school students learn the benefits of taking AP, honors, anddual enrollment courses and preparing for the SAT.

The Summit also includes a college fair for high school students to interact with college recruiters. In addition, the middle school students attend a career fair to expose them to different career options. Achievers also have the opportunity to showcase their talents during the Talent Extravaganza.

Everybody knows somebody who’s been affected by an eating disorder, but because of NEDA, there is hope for prevention, cures and improved access to quality care. Every walk helps to provide fundraising to prevent, treat, and find recovery for eating disorder patients, every single dollar makes a difference in the fight against eating disorders. Join us for a “day in the life” of a professional working in a career of interest with the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce members.  Shadowing gives you a realistic preview of a career and helps you learn about the skills required to succeed in a position. Many students who participated in the past landed jobs and internships by making connections with community leaders. Students shadow from 9am to 11am with the professional at their place of work. Then, join us for lunch and networking with all participants, the President of the Chamber of Commerce from 11:30am to 1:00pm. USFSM X Northwestern Leadership Series

USFSM X Northwestern Mutual Partner on Leadership Series, Spring 2018

The University of South Florida-Sarasota Manatee Campus hosts Northwestern Mutual Partner on Leadership Series, Led by local executives of the wealth management company, the series is divided into four weekly workshops of two hours each and teaches time management, goal-setting and leadership skills on and off the job. Ten student finalists are participating in the program. Upon completion, they’ll receive leadership certificates and $250 each. Representatives from USFSM’s Careers Services Office and Northwestern Mutual pored over more than 30 resumes the past few weeks and conducted interviews to select students for the workshops, which are held on campus.While popular with finance and accounting majors, the program is open to students outside the College of Business as well. That’s by design, because the program’s overarching message can apply to a variety of leadership settings. The annual leadership series has a powerful way to affect change in the lives of students. Alexandra Werth assists in coordinating the workshop for the four nights, including ordering catering for guests, facilitating the event, set-up/tear-down, technology for guest speakers, digital media coordination, advertising for the NW Manual event on Handshake, Orgsync, USF Website, and meeting with students for prior interview, and any other duties needed.
